PROJECT DETAILS
Transform normal, everyday life situations into your own wacky, custom playground.
The new Augmented Reality Goggles are a conceptual AR experience, combining the latest mixed reality technology together with the ever-popular Snapchat filters to create an instant playful experience, augmenting your vision with funny filters, silly faces and crazy effects.
The AR Goggles come with the ability to view the Snap effects right inside the glasses (instead of on a phone). The eyepieces are transparent displays, giving the ability to see the holographic projections inside the glasses themselves. The glasses are a pair of chic looking frames built with depth-sensing cameras and motion-tracking AI, transparent augmented-reality displays, and a nifty spectacle case to charge the Goggles when not being worn.
Project developed with Aibolot Makenov while at Swift Creatives.
Make a statement
Eye-catching design
The AR Snapchat experience is wrapped in a young, vibrant and iconic design, complimenting the playful user experience. With a clear reference to the camera archetype, the sunglasses become a distinguished and easily recognisable product.

Snapchat
A disappearing act
Snapchat is fun, but it’s reliant on phones. Once you take the video, you’re out of the moment. How can we keep the essence of snapchat (filters etc) while keeping people in the moment?

OPPORTUNITY
Develop a device that can bring the ethos of Snapchat into real life with human interactions?
Design process
Contemporary-yet-funky
The form of the goggles had to be unlike anything that's out there, but still be recognisable as glasses to be worn. Through iterative testing and physical prototyping, the design lead to two cameras resting either end of the temple-stems, with two bold circular lenses in between. The result is a pair of spectacles that look contemporary yet funky.

CMF & Form
Snapchat is at its core a fun, playful company, and this brand language had to echo through the design. Plastics, soft forms and bright colours were a focus, to give a funky, cool image.
The outcome
Groovy Goggles
The goggles themselves are somewhat minimal in appearance but pay homage to classic funky sunglasses. The cameras are understated, and the internal electronics are surrounded by the ridged, tapered frames, with the batteries taking space in the arms.

Live in the moment
No storage in sight
Just like how normal Snapchat messages are automatically deleted after 5-10 seconds, the new AR experience is never recorded and never saved, instead solely visible in realtime for the person wearing the Goggles. This puts the emphasis instead of having immediate fun, instead of curating an image for later viewing.

Intuitive interactions
No need for on/off buttons
To further enhance the effortless experience of using the goggles, the on/off and charging interface was built into the arms themselves. The glasses power on as soon as the temple stems are opened, allowing contact points on the stem and the frame to connect and boot the goggles. The same contact points are used to charge, with the protective case also doubling as a charging cradle.
